Celebrating the Great Mothers of Yesterday, Today, and Tomorrow

What would we do without the great mothers of this world? We have so much to thank our mothers for, and while we love to celebrate them everyday, they deserve a day that is dedicated to all that they do. In celebration of motherhood, we put together a list to celebrate some of the iconic mothers of today, working towards a better tomorrow.

1. Elizabeth II

Queen Elizabeth II has been a mother for almost 70 years. During her time as Queen of Great Britain and head of the Commonwealth, she’s had four children (two which she had before she began her reign), reigned through various constitutional changes such as the decolonization of Africa, devolution in the UK, and has been visited by (or visited) five popes.

2. Michelle Obama

The former first lady of the United States is a mother to two daughters, and was the first African American first lady. Prior to becoming the first lady, she served as the Associate Dean of Student Services at the University of Chicago, and VP of Community and External Affairs at the University of Chicago’s Medical Center.

3. Beyoncé

Beyond her title as a worldwide musical phenomenon, she is the mother of three children, including twins! She’s released 6 albums, completed 5 global tours as a headliner, and had appearances in 11 different films (including an upcoming lead role in the 2019 remake of The Lion King).

4. JK Rowling

Besides mothering three children, Rowling has written over 20 books — some under her main pen-name, J.K. Rowling, others under names like Robert Galbraith. Her books have been turned into films that have been translated in various languages, and she is a household name for both children and adults.

5. Amal Clooney

Amal is the wife of George Clooney, and the mother of two. As a lawyer, she’s represented everyone from Julian Assange (founder of WikiLeaks), to journalists, and former prime ministers.

6. Viola Davis

Viola was the first African American actress to win an Oscar, Tony, and Emmy in an acting category. She has one child, and saw her breakthrough role as a supporting actress in Doubt.

7. Tory Burch

Mother of three sons and three stepdaughters, the billionaire American fashion designer and businesswoman is the CEO, chairwoman, and designer for her self-titled company Tory Burch.

8. Sheryl Sandberg

Besides founding Leanin.org and holding the position of COO at Facebook, Sheryl is a mother of two children and her name has appeared in the Time 100 as one of the most influential people in the world.
